The threshold where dumbbells become a real alternative to the bar

Below 40 kg apiece, dumbbells remain a complement to barbell work. At 53 kg the relationship reverses: the dumbbell bench press, the one-arm row and loaded lunges reach intensities comparable to barbell movements, with greater range of motion and stabiliser work on top.

This tier suits experienced lifters who want to structure their programme around dumbbells rather than around a rack. The 32 kg of additional plates and the extension set are delivered from the outset, which avoids two successive orders a few months apart.

The rack becomes essential at this load level

At 53 kg per dumbbell, picking them up off the floor is no longer merely uncomfortable, it becomes a risk factor. The dedicated rack puts the dumbbells at grip height and lets you position yourself between them to take hold symmetrically, without a full bend of the back.
