Frequently asked questions about bumper plates
Bumper plates or cast iron plates: which should I choose?
Bumpers are dense rubber and take dropped bars: essential for weightlifting, CrossFit and any lift where the bar is released. Cast iron or steel plates are thinner and cheaper, suited to squat, bench press and controlled deadlifts.
What is the difference between black bumpers and colour competition bumpers?
Black bumpers are the most affordable and suit daily training. Competition bumpers follow the international colour code (green 10 kg, yellow 15 kg, blue 20 kg, red 25 kg), are thinner and more accurate, with a wider steel hub: you can load more plates on the bar.
Which bumper sets do you offer?
70 kg, 100 kg and 150 kg sets, in black or multicolour, plus single pairs from 5 to 25 kg. To progress in small steps, fractional plates from 0.125 kg to 2.5 kg go on the end of the bar.
Are bumpers compatible with my bar?
Yes, with any Olympic bar with 50 mm sleeves. All Uni Strength bumpers have a 50 mm bore and the same diameter (Olympic format), so the bar height off the floor stays constant.
Can I drop a bar loaded with bumpers?
Yes, that is what they are for: the rubber absorbs the impact and protects the bar, the floor and the plates. To protect the floor and reduce noise, pair them with rubber tiles of 15 mm or more.
